Through her career and personal life, Sharon (Service) Fetherston forever influenced thousands of lives. Her excellence as a teacher was widely known and often envied. As a drama teacher it was more than just directing acclaimed productions -- she touched countless lives improving, mending, encouraging and challenging them all. Her ability to bring together the best of her students, herself and her colleagues made for legendary innovative and entertaining theatre. Her work as an English teacher was without equal. Students and parents strove to take advantage of her uncanny ability to bring meaning to the world of literature and history. Her community of peers extended beyond Canada’s borders, and her students learned to excel in writing and interpretation. No doubt, this was in part thanks again to her ability to collaborate with talent in her colleagues. Animals were a big part of Sharon’s life; she got her first horse when she was three years old, a gift from her grandfather. She raised and trained Arabians and Tennessee Walkers. In addition, a huge variety of dogs shared her heart and home. All her animals were cared for with a level of devotion and compassion that left them spoiled and well-trained. She lived a life rich with ‘firsts’ and ‘bests’; she was an excellent cook, the first female ultralight aircraft instructor in Canada, a world traveler (to such places as the Netherlands, Spain, Costa Rica and Japan) and she showed no signs of slowing down. We all benefitted from her example. And herein lies Sharon’s legacy; her successes were often found in the gifts she brought to her students and to her friends. It’s no wonder that so many of her students remained her friend long after class was dismissed.
